Bogdan Bogdanovic: Beacon of Hope

Bogdan Bogdanovic was relatively unknown when he was drafted 27th by the Suns in the 2014 draft. Two years later, Bogdanovic was sent to the Kings along with the Suns’ 13th and 28th picks in that draft for Marquese Chriss.

As a Sacramento Kings fan, I had no idea who this foreign product was. So what did I do? Head straight to YouTube to check out his highlights. What I could analyze from short clips of his game was that he could shoot well and wasn’t afraid to step into the spotlight.

I was excited to hear that he would be coming to the NBA for the start of the 2017 season. The Serbian product would play in the shadows of late great Serbian Kings, Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic. Both of whom are in the Kings’ front office.

Known as BB8, after the droid from the new Star Wars movies, he has become a fan favorite here in the capital of California. He has played efficiently, shooting 46% from the field while knocking down triples at a 40% rate.

He hasn’t been afraid to take big shots either. He is usually the one getting the ball in clutch situations and even hit the game winner over reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Draymond Green, to beat the Warriors back in November.

For his overall great play in his rookie campaign, Bogdanovic was awarded a trip to the Rising Stars Game to play for Team World during the NBA All Star Weekend.

During the Rising Stars Game last night, Bogey shined as he buried three after three, even hitting one from close to the logo on a pull up in transition. Though the game was dominated by little defense and high flying dunks, Bogdanovic took home the MVP honors after scoring 26 points, dishing out 6 assists and hitting seven long balls.

Kings fan everywhere are excited over his performance and new hardware edition. It shows that the Kings might actually have pieces to build a strong team in the future with Bogdanovic near the center of it all.

His teammates DeAaron Fox and Buddy Hield also participated in this game. Hield led Team World in scoring while Fox took the backseat after being a late addition for Lonzo Ball.

However you want to look at it, the Kings have players ready to rise to the spotlight and Bogdanovic stepped up in the highest way possible. While Kings fans still have to watch the process unfold and grimace though losing basketball for another season or two, Bogdanovic will return to Sacramento a hero. A glimmer of hope for this shoddy franchise.
